The period from 1807 to 1851 is the beginning and preparing times for the Protestant missions to China. In 1807, Robert Morrison, a missionary sent by the London Missionary Society in England, arrived in Guangzhou. His coming marked the beginning of the Protestant missionary enterprises in south China. Robert Morrison was employed by the British East India Company as a Chinese interpreter, thus he had a legal status and could initiate the Protestant movement in China. He and William Milne, another missionary sent by the London Missionary Society, organized “The Ultra-Ganges Mission”, and founded its headquarter in Malacca, where a base for missions to China was gradually set up.
